O'Lenick wins Merit Award.

The Society of Cosmetic Chemists (SCC) announced Society award winners ahead of its Annual Scientific Meeting at the Sheraton NY Times Square in New York City. Anthony O’Lenick (Siltech) won the Merit Award. O’Lenick’s “name is synonymous with volunteerism, distinguished leadership, and outstanding service to the cosmetics and personal care industry,” said Erica O’Grady, CAE, executive director/CEO of the Society. “We are delighted to honor Tony this year with the Merit Award. During his 40-year membership, he has been a tireless champion of the SCC and its mission to advance cosmetic science.” The Young Scientist Award recognizes the best paper by a young scientist, under the age of 40 that was presented at the 2018 Annual Scientific Meeting. Liyuan Ji (University of Cincinnati) won for her paper, “Mechanistic Understanding of the Effects of Air Pollution on Human Skin Health Using Innovative Human Skin Explant Mode.” The Green Star Award recognizes the formulator’s outstanding work in green formulations during the previous 12-month period. Cynthia Johnson of C-Care, LLC won for her Strawberry Cream Cleanser with Blue Light Protection. The Society of Cosmetic Chemists Award, which recognizes the best paper presented at the 2018 Annual Scientific Meeting that made the greatest scientific contribution to knowledge in the field of protecting against or ameliorating damage to human skin caused by exposure to UV radiation, was presented to Helen Yang (Amway) for “Blue Light Science 101: Harmful or Helpful for The Skin?” The Joseph P. Ciaudelli Award honors the best article appearing in the Journal of Cosmetic Science on the subject of hair care technology. The winner this year is a father and son duo—Kiyoshi Yamauchi, PhD. & Asao Yamauchi, PhD. (Osaka Research Institute of Industrial Science and Technology). Their article, “New Aspects of the Structure of Human Scalp Hair-II: Tubular Structure and Material Flow Property of the Medulla,” was published in the Journal of Cosmetic Science (Vol. 69. No. 1). The Hans A. Schaeffer Award honors the most innovative paper presented at the 2018 SCC Annual Scientific Meeting. Roger McMullen, PhD won for his paper entitled, “Evaluation of the Surface Properties of Hair with Acoustic Analysis.” The Shaw Mudge Award recognizes the best paper presented at the 2018 SCC Annual Scientific Meeting.Nadine Pernodet, PhD (The Estée Lauder Companies) won for her paper entitled, “The New Frontiers of Innovation in the Cosmetic Industry.” The Des Goddard Award for the most innovative paper on the topic of polymer science related to cosmetics or personal care presented at the 2018 Annual Scientific Meeting or published in the Journal of Cosmetic Science, was won by Hani Fares (Ashland) for his Journal article entitled, “Investigating Film Properties of Polymers Used in Anhydrous Sunscreen Formulations Using Scanning Electron Microscopy (Sem): Polymer/Polymer Interactions and their Relation to Vapor Transmission.” “SCC is proud to highlight the outstanding work, cutting-edge research and advancements that our members achieve in the cosmetic sciences,” said Kelly Dobos, 2019 SCC president and cosmetics technical manager for Americas, Sun Chemical Corporation. “These winners join a prestigious list of accomplished professionals who have been recognized by their peers for their outstanding contributions to our industry.” In addition, SCC will present two 2019 Robert A. Kramer Lifetime Service Awards during the annual meeting. This year’s recipients are Robert Y. Lochhead, PhD (University of Southern Mississippi) and Joseph P. Pavlichko (posthumously). “These two gentlemen have served the Society with distinction during their memberships and the caliber of their character and volunteer spirit are second-to-none. We are pleased to be able to honor and publicly recognize their contributions,” added Dobos.
